Reshaping care for 2SLGBTQI+ patients with cancer

Queering Cancer co-leads Amanda and Kim are radiation therapists so it was extra special to talk to Elekta (a leading global radiation therapy equipment company) about how sexual and gender diverse folks affected by cancer should receive equitable care when they come for treatment.
“2SLGBTQI+ folks may carry experiences of medical mistrust and trauma when they come for treatment. They may not feel safe disclosing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This lack of information about who the person is can impact the care we give them, from patient education, psychosocial support, and, in some cases, radiotherapy planning and treatment. We should respect who they are as individuals and provide safe and affirming care.”
The article talks about the vital need for education for healthcare professionals and changing socio-political climates. We also discuss how targeted anti-2SLGBTQI+ campaigns and legislation have deepened isolation and, in some cases, impacted patients’ access to safe healthcare.
