Centring queerness in cancer care

At our recent Community of Practice gathering, oncology social workers Margo Kennedy (Princess Margaret Cancer Centre) and Dani Taylor (Young Adult Cancer Canada) explored what it meant to centre queerness in cancer care. They emphasized that queer identities should not be treated as an add-on, but as foundational to creating connection, belonging, and more humane care. Dani reflected on the community-led development of queer supports at Young Adult Cancer Canada and the importance of sustainability and preventing burnout, while Margo shared how the SGDC program evolved within a medical institution in response to patients who did not feel they fully belonged in either mainstream cancer or queer community spaces. Both speakers underscored that queering cancer care is collective, evolving work that strengthens both patients and providers through community, creativity, and finding one’s people.
